	Ramon has won a trip to Istanbul to represent Spain, with a performance in a red shirt and sweaty pits. To my mind it was a particularly strong pre-selection in Spain this year, so much so in fact that Davinia's effort (who came 4th and last) was just about my favourite losing pre-selection song for many a year. I didn't write this BTW, I nicked it. Ramon is 18 and hails from Las Palmas in the Canaries. He certainly has the Eurovision-wide cherished "hunk appeal" and is also a pretty good singer despite looking more like a prop forward than a pop star. Many felt that he was unlucky to finish second in the singers competition. "What he lacks in dancing ability is more than compensated for by his rich and melodic voice" has been quoted, but not by me. Ramon has still not had the opportunity to have a single release like other professional singers, but he's sure that his time will come. In fact, his dream is to live on music. On a scene rock or something of pop would be taken with some subject fused. "This Canary Islander is the unique one of his family, a family who seems to have no other natural vocal talent. He has two older brothers, and neither of them shares the passion to sing. Ramon is a calm lad who considers himself as a good person. For him friends are essential: he says that he could not live without them. And as far as love... he confesses that he would like to know what it is. He is also a true sportsman: Soccer means as much to him as surfing or guards(?). Another one of its great passions is music. His favorite artists are Paul McCartney, Alexander Sanz and Luis Miguel."












	The Singer IWell, it's Spanish. And without sounding like a cultural ignoramus, you know what you're going to get with Spain in the Eurovision. Ramon is a strapping lad, with a penchant for tight t-shirts and a dislike of underarm deodorant. Of mild interest is that he's from the Canary Islands, and therefore must have an innate dislike for Brits.












	The Past "La La La"...no I'm not talking over the abysmal "Gwendolyne" by Julio Inglesias, I am instead referring to the only time this stalwart Euro nation has won outright. Massiel bagged it in 1968 (beating Sir Cliff), when the rest of the adult population were indulging in free love and experimenting with mind expanding drugs. They should have watched the Eurovision instead, it's almost the same thing. They came joint first a year later, when it was hosted in Spain, and everyone was so stoned they let 4 countries share it. We've long since seen the end of such good natured camaraderie. Recently Spain have been sending popstrels to the party, and have solid top ten form as a result. Oh, and for me the nonsensical anthem of Eurovision has to be Rosa. Everybody..."Europe's Living a Celebration, , todos juntos, vamos a cantar, Europe's Living a Celebration, Ni Ni Na Ne Na Ne Na Ne Na...".





	The Song There's degrees of Spanish-ness in Spanish Eurovision. This one measures 7.2 on the Latino-scale. An extremely dodgy title aside, this has got most of that which is required to win. Rather nice use of the horn section, which has been underemployed this year. I do hope that Ramon does under-employ one of his backing singer from his final OT performance. She was a minging mess of a woman.




	Overall I bet Enrique Iglesias would fancy a song like this, the state his career's in right now. Spain never win these days, but this is a comparatively strong effort for them, and you never know may cause Europe to live that celebration on May the 15th.
