”Cosmopolitan Karawanken Beat” or ”World Hits in Oberkrainer Sound”
Who doesn’t remember Slavko Avsenik and his Original Oberkrainer? And how many true-blue Austrians at the time didn’t curse the fact that this golden and gold-winning sound was created by Slavs and not ”Berggermanen” like themselves? Still one grew to love them dearly, the Oberkrainer. Alpine joviality with a few hearty shots of Karawanken melancholy.

Today, six musicians from widely different fields have joined up to
a)transform the Oberkrainer sound from its beer-tent bliss to a serious world music genre,
b)without losing the musical fun and puns,
c)and to prove that every song, every melody – whether pop, jazz or classical – can be ”krainerized”.

The Singer
"First you have to have an idea like this: take legendary jazz and pop hits, clothe them in the folkloric dress of Oberkrain in Slovenia – and land a hit on the music market that can hold its own at every folklore festival from “Blauen Bock” to the hit parade of folk music, in discos from Keitum to Tölz and at every international jazz festival. Guaranteed – you’ve never heard “Night and Day” like that before!" Online Musik Magazin
And who am I to argue? Not one of the fusion sounds that was at the top of shopping list, but it works wonderfully. The players actually play instruments well, the singer is good to look at...pure ESC joy.
It is also worth mentioning that the Accordionist, Anton (“Worthy of Praise” in the Slavic language), truly lives up to his name.

The Past

The real miracle really is that Austria have actually won the ESC. We all took pity on third timer Udo in 1966, thus giving Teutons something to shout about that year. Since then they've been either mid-table or shite, and often both at the same time. Thomas Forstner merits particular attention, doing it twice and coming 5th and then last. Both songs were absolute shockers. Last year's Tie Break went dwon 6-0 6-0. There's no Eurosong pedigree in Austria....their history is more like Aldi own-brand dog food.

The Song

If only for being the downright happiest song at the contest, then it deserves a prize. There's more Brass on display here than in the Brass Doorknocker Museum in Knock, Ireland. A trombonist who also does the dosey-doe and yodels too...the man has a talent. A singer in a Heidi get-up, but with lipstick. Singing about a Spanish lad ("who can dance and sing...and more"), in some Spanish. In Austria! Truly Austria is a welcoming place after all!
The oompah beat is strong with this one. This is the sound of Oberkrainer, not the most fashionable sound, I admit, but surely a crowd pleaser at Eurovision.

Overall
The diehards fans have inevitably labelled this as a stereotypical vacuous song that weakens the contest as a whole. "Arse to you all!" I say. This is a rollicking slice of Alpine mumbo-jumbo, with actual instruments played with abandon. If it was all about having fun, Austria would win. But they won't, because it's not. As Terry says "it's a serious business, this Eurovision you know." I still very much hope that it will gain a place in the final though.

In a Nutshell
"Karawanken melancholy? It's not what I can hear!"

“The Shrink Says”

A suitable song for clients suffering major depressive disorders who wish to turn their lives around. Not unlike seasonal affective disorder, which in my case starts at the end of May each year, people do have periods of hopelessness and sadness that last for more than 2 weeks. Repeated listening to this will either rouse you out of your otherwise permanent mania, or otherwise get you reaching for the razorblades.
I shall be using this in future sessions

Y Asi

You know the girl who came from Cuba
He loves her music and her songs
She came and she saw
Austrians dance quite slow

Then she connects with inspiration
Changed the rhythm of her song
So now, here's a chance
To see how she will dance

Baila como Latina
En ritmo puro de la música alpina
Baila como Latina
En ritmo puro de la música alpina

Y así, y así
Y así, baila la chica de Caribe
Y así, y así
Y así, baila la chica de Caribe

The second part of our story
The girl from Cuba fell in love
The boy she'd adored
Could dance and sing and more

He was the master of the yodel
His (yodel, yodel, yodel) was unique
Oh he was so smart
She danced and won his heart

Baila como Latina
En ritmo puro de la música alpina

Y así, y así
Y así, canta el cantante de los Alpes
