"As she loves sharing, Gülseren teached Turkish to children in Paris."

"Gülseren's voice is incredibly beautiful, she dances like a fairy and her music is a mix of tradition, techno, pop, groove, latino, oriental. A universal and innovating style !"
Taken from "http://perso.wanadoo.fr/gulseren/an/accueil_an.htm"

Gülseren was born in Istanbul, Turkey. Her parents moved to France when she was only seven. She had to face a new country, a new language and a new culture and since then, she's been living in Paris.
Music is Gülseren's vocation and passion. She's always been attracted by any kind of art, and studied classical music in Paris. She also studied at the INALCO (French university about oriental art, literature and culture) to complete her knowledge about the country she comes from and not to forget her roots. As she loves sharing, Gülseren teached turkish to children in Paris.

She started very young to play darbuka (turkish kind of drums), that she still plays on stage. Multi-talented artist, Gülseren is a wonderful singer, musician, dancer, author. She wrote most of the lyrics in her latest album.

Gülseren is very professionally-minded. She loves concerts and the stagework more than anything else. For many years, she's been singing all over Europe, mostly in Turkey and in France. She met and worked with many famous artists such as Georges Moustaki, Michel Montanaro, Michel Garnier,... This enriched her experience and gave her a chance to sing in many foreign languages like turkish, french, yougoslavian, spanish, arabic, hebrew, provençal (a local language in the south of France), etc. She still loves mixing languages in her show.
For more than two years (1997-1999), every night, she used to sing at "Les Trois Mailletz", the very famous french jazz and world music cabaret located in the heart of Paris. She still performs there on Friday and Saturday nights.
Gülseren took part in several albums but she had a dream of recording her own album, which came true in 2001.

Another milestone in Gülseren's life and carrier is the film "Roos and Rana" , the story of two young girls, one Turkish and the other Dutch , in which Gülseren plays her own character. Sezen Aksu, the greatest turkish singer of the past two decades, was also called for this part.

The Singer

You can still see Gulseren perform at a Parisian cabaret club on Friday and Saturday nights. But she doesn't rely on peacock feathers and peep hole bras, oh no, Gulseren is an adept banger of the Turkish drum. She sings too. A powerful enough presence on stage, you can expect Turkey to provide quite a professional touch to proceedings.

The Past

Sertab couldn't have happened to Turkey at a better time. During futile attempts of the nation to sally forward for EU membership, along came a 4 foot toothy curiosity who did more for their cause in 3 minutes than the whole government had achieved in the preceding 10 years... maybe. 2003 saw the first victory for Turkey in what until that point had basically been a shameful experience. Sebnem Paker (not Lady Penelope's chauffeur, there's no "r") had miraculously come fairly close, but apart from that occasion even Portugal were becoming jealous of their pitiable challenges to bring attention to the nation "where East meets West". Their successful hosting in 2004 changed all that, and putting aside politics for a moment, and instead embracing bad European music, we welcome Turkey with open arms.

The Song
On paper, Gulseren is a broadcaster's wet dream for Eurovision. A long haired lass with an ethnic song...and...wait for it.. a strong ability with a range of drums... big drums amongst them. And she's dressed remarkably like the newly crowned goddess of Eurosong, Ruslana. Unfortunately the song itself just isn't memorable. There's not a key change in sight and the repetition factor is high. It's old-fashioned, and maybe too watery to pull in the ethnic vote. They may well lapse into old habits this year and find themselves at the bottom of the pile in 2006.

Gestures - 38 Just off the podium, which is a shame, because Gulseren enjoys her drum to such an extent she didn't have quite enough time to fully express her multifarious hand waving techniques. It'll be interesting though to see if she can keep in key through all the exertions she'll need to employ.
"Wanna" Count - 0

Overall
"Come back cutie" is a particularly attractive lyric, especially when it comes from the Turks. Taking this into account, and the fact that she never looks at the drums she strikes, makes me think that Turkey may do better than the song deserves.
Certainly not a bet to put your Ottoman rug on.

In a Nutshell
"Never mind Moldova, Gulseren's the slapping queen"

"The Shrink Says"

Ever think of yourself as an object of attention or become aware of 'being'? It is apparent from Gulseren's confident traversing of the stage and her bellicose beating of the drum, that she exists on a semi-permanent basis in this mental state. But does this pre-occupation with self-awareness belie a deep seated fear of the id, or self? Does this surface confidence and ability to emote to a mass of strangers hide an subconscious urge to cry for acceptance? Can you tell I have no qualifications and don't know what I'm talking about?
