"It may sound like it contains obscure folk songs or pieces from a musical or rock opera, but don't be deceived: all of its tunes were composed in 2003."

"NOX was the name of an ancient goddess who was believed to be the queen of the night.

On the first album of Nox, the infinitely rich tunes and lyrics of Hungarian folk music are blended with the electronic music of the third millennium. This is how we build a bridge between the ancient Hungarian pentatonic scale with the world of contemporary music.

The front man of the band is the acclaimed Nagy Tamás who is considered to be one of the greatest talents in Hungarian folk dancing. The lady by his side, Péter Szabó Szilvia, has an exceptionally beautiful voice; she was discovered by the producer. Now she has a great chance to prove her talent as a singer in the band. The creative team behind the band has paid special attention to giving Nox a unique image that stands out in the world of Hungarian pop music.

Nox is now well-known around the country. In the autumn of 2003, their second album 'Magic Spell' came out in Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia at the same time. It was a real step forward without compromising the band's sound, and it featured the band's own songs rather than cover versions. It may sound like it contains obscure folk songs or pieces from a musical or rock opera, but don't be deceived: all of its tunes were composed in 2003. The musical style did not change, essentially, but it has become more complex.

Traditional and contemporary instruments are superbly blended and while, the lyrics leave behind the simple world of folk songs, they retained their poetic touch

The Singer

The lady opposite goes by the name of Peter, and from the picture it looks a bit like she's losing some of her hair up top (very much like my father, her namesake). But don't fret, she won't need to go down the route of rugby player Austin Healy. Peter is a cracking lass, who wears her skintight leather shorts with startling confidence. Growing up in a small village, she has something of the barn about her.

Barnet-wise, the same can't be said for the main choreographer, a man bereft of coiffeurage, probably deciding that a rug could not be secured due to all the foot slapping and head nodding he gets up to.

A solid pair of Euro wannabes.

The Past

After a brief dalliance with Eurovision in the 1990's, 2005 hails a welcome return for Hungary. Ginger curled Charlie put a lot of people off wanting them back after 1998, but time is a great healer, and with many cheap airlines flying into Budapest for fun, we can cheer on Hungary and still have change for a plate of perch in a paprika stew.

The Song
Take the winner from last year and the runner-up from last year. Combine the main bits from each, and quite simply you have "Forogj Vilag".
It has the long black haired, wildly dressed young maiden singing in her native language, surrounded by a gang of backing dancers (a la Ruslana), and traditional musical instrumentations and dancing (a la Mr Joksimovic). On paper it shouldn't fail, and it does have a lot going for it. But Ruslana last year overcame singing in her national language with a bestial performance the likes of which hadn't been seen since "Animal Farm", and I'm not sure if this song has quite the same oomph. That said, I wouldn't be at all unhappy if Hungary wins it.

Gestures - 40 Foot slapping largely dominates here, and although with occasional jumping and hand clapping, there is relatively little movement from our lovely ice maiden who prefers to jut out her groin in tight back pants. All sorts of traditional dancers in this video (including the usual Hasidic Jews, a group of professional dancers who are always a tremendous boost for a song's chances). Bronze medal for gestures.
"Wanna" Count - 0 (2 "wants" in English translation)

Overall
Cruising into the final, even though it's amongst the hot properties of the semi final in the middle of the draw. I wish Nox well, and I inevitably compare this to Ruslana's bombastic video of last year, when my only concern was if she could translate the majesty of the video to a stage with only five other dancers. Nox will have to sack some of the supporting troupe, and it may adversely affect their chances. But whatever you do, keep a Hasidic Jew, eh Nox?

In a Nutshell
"She has something of the night about her"

"The Shrink Says"

Cannon Bard Theory
this theory of emotion states that an emotion is produced when some stimulus triggers the thalamus to send information simultaneously to the brain (specifically, the cerebral cortex) and the autonomic system (including the skeletal muscles). Thus, the stimulus is perceived at both a physiological and the subjective level.

Useful here in explaining how the music of Nox inevitably reaches down to the subconscious and illicits a physical movement of grabbing the shoulder of the nearest person and jumping repeatedly into the air. Exactly the same thing happened to me, after listening to "Forogj Vilag" on my Ipod in a lift. The others in the lift weren't too happy and asked me to cease and desist immediately.

Spin, world!

Spin, world!

Spin, world!- Sweep me into the light,
Or i shall not live tomorrow!
Your wild night kills me -, although it waits for me with a kiss...

Don't hurt me, world!- Don't embrace, don't feel-,
Your love hurts more!
Don't play, world!- Let me go, if a happy land calls!

Ha'jna'ne...
I want to be somewhere else for a long time!
Ha'jna'ne...
I don't see any light, i won't wait for it!
Ha'jna'ne...
I disappear in the sky or on the ground, just anywhere!
Ha'jna'ne...
This is how all sorrow may turn into a dream...

Spin, world!- I'm cold in the dark-,
You are at the end of all hope.
Crazy world: you flame up but turn into ice...

Don't hurt me, world!- I'm not walking on your path -,
Don't ask, don't call, don't see me!
Don't regret it, world!- All other hearts are yours...
