"(His song) La Ritournelle was widely considered to be one of the...most anticipated releases in the United Kingdom in 2005"

The Spin

Sebastien Tellier is one of these few rare breed artists, combining virtuosity, humour and overall talent reminding us of entertainers à la Robert Wyatt, Syd Barret or Serge Gainsbourg. His live performances are considered as being intense, emotional experiences hypnotising the audience.

In 2001 Sebastien went on his first world tour with his début album L'Incroyable Verité, as the opening group for AIR, playing 80 dates in total and delivering his uncompromising mixture to an international audience for the first time: His track Fantino was instantly used for Sofia Coppola's highly acclaimed film Lost In Translation. It is not only his talent and his physical presence on stage, which confer his shows that special touch, but also Sebastian’s choice of collaborating artists. For his second album, Politics, released in 2004, he teamed up with a wide range of artists, including Tony Allen, the inventor of afro-beat and one of the most influential drummers of his time.

Further Sebastien Tellier collaborated with his long term partner, Pamelia Kurstin, maybe the best Theremin player in the world as well as with the always excellent pianist Simon Dalmais. The results from these collaborations can be more than exhibited. The seminal piece La Ritournelle is widely considered to be one of the most moving love songs ever recorded and was one of the most anticipated releases in the United Kingdom in 2005.

“One day, Sebastien Tellier’s slow-burning club anthem will be huge” . NME, January 2005.

His work finds a lot of appreciation among fellow artists and got him a place on stage as the opening act on Royksopp's European tour, as well as the The Magic Numbers or Moby's tour support in France. Always searching for new styles and opportunities to develop his musical universe Sebastien Tellier also collaborated with the Bulgarian Symphonic Orchestra or the Parisian Boule Noire Orchestra.

2006 saw the release of Sebastien Tellier's Sessions album, consisting of acoustic reinterpretations from his previous Politics album. Besides keeping himself busy with production, remixing other artists and lending his voice to other musicians Sebastien also made a step into the movie world. He played the main role in Quentin Dupieux's film Non Film, a movie of a charismatic and photogenic leader in a world where we can film without a camera, as well as Dupieux's latest film Steak, released in June 2007. Furthermore he has produced the soundtrack for Narco, a French production starring Benoît Poelvoorde, Guillaume Canet and Zabou Breitman, as well as contributing to Daft Punk's Electroma film with a track called Universe.Sébastien Tellier is the latest in a long line of eccentric Frenchmen.

The Singer

Aah. Super hirsute arrogant acquiescent French fool. Decides to sing in English and causes an onion & garlic stink big enough to reach the nostrils of the nation's government. According to them their national identity has been damaged by this linguistic disaster, although if they heard it they may want to distance themselves from the song completely. Mr Tellier has had a hit before, adance floor anthem by all counts called "La Ritournelle", and has even appeared on the "Lost in Translation" film soundtrack. I like this man of arrogance.

The Past

Socialist France, and one of the Big Four, who more often than not go down the "chanteuse" route (and woe-betide any entrant differing from the norm). They had a lot of success in the early years when usually only 4 countries took part, and the Brits were represented by a young Paul Shane.
They had a rough time in the late 90's however, precipitated by a bad Fanny (oh, that old story), but have chanteused it back into the limelight since then, and are unfortunately well overdue another victory. They will probably have to distance themselves even more from everything NATO though in the process, and I don't know if Sarkozy thinks it's particularly worth the effort.

The Song

Their video to the latest monument to drivel has our hero throwing the microphone around from scene to scene in the typically ironic French manner. Ooh aren't I clever says Sebastien as he punches a man, surfs, holds up a shop, and gets arrested. He can do whatever he likes, because no-one will recognise him without glasses and after a shave anyway. It's an Air-like airplay friendly bit of tinkly fun, and it's the top of my charts.

Overall

Having said all the above I really like this song. Of course it won't trouble the leaderboard, but it's France and they never do anyway. So let's rejoice for this man who like never before, cocks a snoop at the history of the contest to such an extent I may be surprised if he even knows what plane to get on from Orly.

Divine

No no no no no no no
I'm looking for a band today
I see the Chivers anyway
Through my eyes

Oh oh oh
I... I'm alone in life to say
I love the Chivers anyway
'Cause Chivers look divine
Look away
They try to find the Milky Way
They love to drink it every day

No no no no no no no
You... you and I, it's like you said
I'm not a Chivers anyway
You look fine

Oh oh oh
I... I'm alone in life to say
I love the Chivers anyway
'Cause Chivers look divine
Look away
They try to find the Milky Way

I... You and me, it's as you know,
how my heart succumbed
She looks fine

Oh oh oh
I'm looking for a band today
I see the Chivers anyway
I'll be a Chivers guy some day
In my mind

Dudu dududu dududu...
Dudu dududu dududu...
Du... dudu...
