The Spin

Morena (Margherita Camilleri) is a Maltese singer. She is a Gozitan citizen. Morena participated in several festivals. She participated in the Malta TV International Song Festivalin 2007, and won with the song "Il-Boghod Mill-Ghajn,Il-Boghod Mill-Qalb". Her debut in the Malta Song For Europe was in the year 2006. She performed the song "Time" with the singer Paul Giordimaina. The song finished in 9th place with 3046 points from a field of 18 songs participating. In 2008 she then passed to the final with the songs "Casanova" and "Vodka" both written and composed by Philip Vella and Gerard James Borg. In the final the winning song "Vodka" received 49 points from the jury and the maximum 16,979 points (33 %) from televoting while her other song Casanova received 3607 points from televoting and 40 points from the Jury and the song placed 5th.

Morena has won the Malta Song for Europe Festival with song "Vodka". The Gozitan, a relatively new face on the music scene, emerged as the clear winner with 49 points from the jury and 16,979 votes through televoting for the song composed by Philip Vella and penned by Gerard James Borg, who already have massive Eurovision experience as their songs have represented Malta in Eurovision 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2007. The song is actually not about drinking, but about espionage and "Vodka" is secret code discovered by main hero.

Claudia Faniello (sister of Eurovision 2001 and 2006 entrant Fabrizio Faniello) finished second and third with songs "Carravagio" and "Sunrise".

Televoting and SMS lines were opened by presenters Ruth Casingena, John Demanuele and Chiara at approximately 21.15 CET and remained active for 30 minutes, giving ample time for viewers to vote comfortably. Entertainers during the TVM-televised night at the Malta Convention Centre in Ta' Qali included former winners Mike Spiteri and Olivia Lewis. Natalie Gauci, the 26-year-old singer of Maltese descent and winner of the Australian Idol contest last year was a special guest singer performing a duet with Chiara on Malta's highest ever Eurovision placement, Angel.

The Past

Aah, Malta. If Eurovision countries were toys, then Malta would be a big cuddly teddy bear (Germany would be Garbage Pail Kids, Sweden would be Barbie, Spain would be Ken).
The little jewel of Eurovision, who for over 10 years now have been sending cuddly, quasi-religious little ditties, almost universally to some success. Three times, three women have come in the top three, which for an island with no railways is pleasing for Maltesers. Thousands of people welcomed Ira back home after her second place in 2002, proof if proof were required just how powerful a inconsequential three minutes of sound can be. Nobody could begrudge Malta a win. Aah.

The Song

It's a song to appeal to Russians everywhere. Re: It's a cold, grainy picture of spy related cheesiness. Magic load of balls.

Nastarovje -
Hey hey hey hey hey

Nastarovje -
Hey hey hey hey hey

The hunt is still on
Here in Gorkij Park
I'm in Danger Zone
Everywhere is pitch dark

I'm running away
To a blanket of snow
"Spy 1 to Spy 4
I've deciphered the code"

Chorus:
"VODKA" - That's the secret word
"VODKA" - And they want it so bad
"VODKA" - I've deciphered the code
Got a rush in the head
"VODKA" - A transparent word

Nastarovje -
Hey hey hey hey hey

Nastarovje -
Hey hey hey hey hey

Cold blood drums within
They breathe down my neck
"Spy 1 to Spy 4
we just have to connect"

Their footsteps are near
Closing in for the kill
My pulse has gone dead
With a heart-racing chill

Chorus:
"VODKA" - That's the secret word
"VODKA" - And they want it so bad
"VODKA" - I've deciphered the code
Got a rush in the head
"VODKA" - A transparent word

Yea Yea Yea Yea
So Bad - Yea
"VODKA" - Yea
"VODKA" - A transparent word.
Yea Yea Yeaaa
