The Gozitan, a relatively new face on the music scene, emerged as the
clear winner with 49 points from the jury and 16,979 votes through televoting
for the song composed by Philip Vella and penned by Gerard James Borg,
who already have massive Eurovision experience as their songs have represented
Malta in Eurovision 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2007. The song is actually not
about drinking, but about espionage and "Vodka" is secret code
discovered by main hero.
Claudia Faniello (sister of Eurovision 2001 and 2006 entrant Fabrizio
Faniello) finished second and third with songs "Carravagio"
and "Sunrise".
Televoting and SMS lines were opened by presenters Ruth Casingena, John
Demanuele and Chiara at approximately 21.15 CET and remained active for
30 minutes, giving ample time for viewers to vote comfortably. Entertainers
during the TVM-televised night at the Malta Convention Centre in Ta' Qali
included former winners Mike Spiteri and Olivia Lewis. Natalie Gauci,
the 26-year-old singer of Maltese descent and winner of the Australian
Idol contest last year was a special guest singer performing a duet with
Chiara on Malta's highest ever Eurovision placement, Angel.
