This band which nowadays is well-known by everybody was founded in 1983 in Teplice. Its charter members were Mr. Milan Špalek, bass guitar, and Mr. Tomáš Krulich, guitar. The group was later joined by Mr. Radek Hurcik, percussions, and Mr. Josef Vojtek, frontman of the band and singer. The last to join the band was Mr. Ota Vána, guitar.

The band has existed in this line-up since 1990 up to now. The breakthrough in the career of this successful, but only regional band, was the release of their debut album Má Ji Motorovou ("She Has It Motor Like") in 1991. Thanks to the enthusiastic response of the public, the band signed an exclusive contract. It was followed by other successful albums one after another. The following albums can be mentioned at random: Colorado in 1994, Cert Na Koze Jel ("The Devil Was Driving a Goat") in 1998, Mega Hu in 1999. The select album Suma Sumárum ("All Things Considered") released in 2002 was sold in an unbelievable for that time number - 128 000, and became thus the best sold musical item in the Czech Republic. Three years later, the Kabát band ("The Coat") comes now with their new project Corrida to the market, the album being impatiently waited for by the public. Their single entitled Malá Dáma ("Little Lady") was selected as their competition song for the participation in the national Eurosong finals.

The Singer

I've been looking forward to the debut of the Czechs for a while now. So imagine my disaappointment. It appears that Kabat are a well thought of rock band in their home nation, which is nice. What isn't nice is the song they will be performing in Helsinki. If you can recall how unfashionable Marillion were in their Fish days, you have Kabat in essence. Another motley crew of roadies done good, they croak along both vocally and physically, weighed down as they are with the restrictions of age and bad personal hygiene. The one bright point is the sweatband, although Josef will be hard pressed to build up any perspiration bearing in mind his lethargic presentation. Poo, this one.

The Past

Amazingly, 2007 sees the first attendance by the Czech Republic to the Eurosong extravaganza. Let's hope they lend a certain classy high art type of touch to the proceedings, rather than the rock-lite Soviet remnant showstopper has-been that they probably will send instead.

The Song

I have never before seen such an ambivalent crowd at a national pre-selection. It's as if the entire audience had been ordered at gunpoint to stand in the studio, because the organisers had run out of mannequins. By the time Kabat performed their dismal rock effort, eight other songs had sucked the life out of the poor Czechs, so it's little wonder that you could spot a tumbleweed blowing across the stage half-way through "Little Lady", a paltry throwback of a rock track, which somnambulates through the usual heavy chords and growls in a merciless three minutes running time.

Overall

Everything is now set up for the Czech Republic to be a Morocco or a Hungary and disappear from the contest almost as soon as they've shown up. Lordi it ain't, but it is the worst debut I can remember.

In a Nutshell
"Mala Dama needs a Dalai Lama miracle"

the philosopher says

action theory Branch of philosophy concerned with the analysis of what human beings do intentionally. This typically includes an effort to distinguish actions from mere events and some proposal concerning the ethical significance of actions. Understanding the relation between choice or volition and the performance of an action, for example, has been taken to be crucial for the ascription of moral responsibility to those who act.

"She blew off the grass and started to play" raises interesting moral questions of an intentional action.

Malá dáma

Utrhla trávu a zacla hrát
Ta malá dáma z predmestí
Co umí lidem z dlaní císt
Tam kocky zrána mívaj hlad
Po noci plný nerestí
Je pohladí a dá jim jíst

Po tme se toulá a ve dne spí
A její oci vedí víc než mý
Došly mi slova, já stál tam jen
S touhle jedinou bych zemrel

S touhle bych zemrel v jedinej den
A jestli Vám to nestací
Kdyby tam stála stovka žen
Vyzvu ji k tanci a to netancim

Tam za tratí svý doupe má
Mince po kašnách posbírá
A pak je skládá na kolej
Staví si chrám, plechovej most
Už po nem krácí první host
Tak at ho nohy nebolej

Prošla si peklem a kouzla zná
Prejetý mince pocítá
A kdo ji spatrí je zatracen
S touhle jedinou bych zemrel

S touhle bych zemrel v jedinej den
A jestli Vám to nestací
Kdyby tam stála stovka žen
Vyzvu ji k tanci a to netancim

Budu si pamatovat na tu chvíli
Když hrála znelo to jak Paganini
A já už vedel, že jsem ztracenej
Zeptal se za kolik s pocitem viny

S touhle bych zemrel v jedinej den
A jestli Vám to nestací
Kdyby tam stála stovka žen
Vyzvu ji k tanci a to netancim

S touhle bych zemrel v jedinej den
A jestli Vám to nestací
Kdyby tam stála stovka žen
Vyzvu ji k tanci a to netancim

Little Lady

She blew off the grass and started to play
That little lady from the suburbs
Who can read from people's palms
There the cats are hungry in the morning
After a night so full of unease
She will stroke and feed them

At night she strays, and sleeps by day
And her eyes know more than mine
Words came to me, I just stood there
I would die with her alone

I would die with her in one day
And if that's not enough for you
If there were a hundred woman there
I'd offer her a dance I can't dance myself

Behind the lane she has her nest
She collects coins in the fountains
And then she beads them on the tracks
She's building herself a temple, a bridge made of tin
Already being crossed by the first passenger
So that his legs won't hurt

She's been through hell and she knows the spells
She collects the trodden coins
And who sees her is damned
I would die with her alone

I would die with her in the only day
And if that's not enough for you
If there were a hundred woman there
I'd offer her a dance I can't dance myself

I will remember that instant
When she played it sounded like Paganini
And I already knew I was lost
I asked myself how much, with a feeling of guilt

I would die with her in the only day
And if that's not enough for you
If there were a hundred woman there
I'd offer her a dance I can't dance myself

I would die with her in the only day
And if that's not enough for you
If there were a hundred woman there
I'd offer her a dance I can't dance myself
