"This time he performed the song Thriller, showcasing his English language talent".

The Spin

Sarbel was born and raised in London, England, to a Greek Cypriot father, Elias, himself a singer/bouzouki player famous in England for many years, and a Lebanese mother. Sarbel studied music (voice), drama, and performing arts at university. From the age of 5 to 16 he performed at the English National Opera and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and has recorded Tosca in English for Chandos Recordings as the shepherd boy.

At 18, he moved to Crete, where he sang at the Heraklion Palladium. At the age of 21 years, he was signed up by Sony in Greece on a six year recording contract. By the next year, Sarbel had hit the Greek, Cypriot, and Arabic music scene and gained a popular status as a singer but also a sex symbol, particularly amongst young female fans.

He shot into the limelight in 2004, when he recorded the oriental hit Se Pira Sovara, featuring popular Greek songstress Irini Merkouri, which first introduced the young singer to fans in Greece, but also across the Middle East (especially Cyprus and Lebanon). The song is based on an Arabic song called Sidi Mansour. In 2005, he released his first solo album, entitled Paraxeno Synesthima. This album went Gold and was re-released with the Wella-sponsored song Thelo na Petaxo and a bonus track of Boro Boro, which he made famous during his MAD Award Ceremony appearance. The songs Se Pira Sovara, Sokolata, and Thelo Na Petakso became hits and later turned into video clips.

In July 2006, he released his second album, Sahara. That same year he recorded a duet with Greek singer Natassa Theodoridou called Na' Soun Thalassa which was also included as a bonus song on the album. The tracks Taxe Mou and Saharah instantly became a hit. Other singles from the song included Sahara and Enas Apo Mas which were all later turned into video clips too. In the same year, he once again performed at the Mad Music awards taking his popularity to a new height. This time he performed the song Thriller showcasing his English language talent.

Seeing his growing popularity, Greek television ERT asked Sarbel to compeate for a ticket to represent Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki. Sarbel had to compete against established singer Christos Dantis and fellow new comer singer Tamta. Sarbel enlisted the help of popular Greek-Swedish composers Alex Papacostantinou, Marcus Englof, and Mack to write his song. They are responsible for many hits of Greek singer Elena Paparizou. They wrote the song Yassou Maria. The song is performed in English with only the word "Yassou" being in Greek. There is also a Greeklish version recorded. Although the performance had some sound problems, it won the majority vote by both the public and jury leading him to win. Sarbel got a total of 39.69% of the votes combined.
Sarbel has also recorded a duet with Swedish singer Cameron called Mi Chica. The song is recorded in Greek and English. It will be released shortly.

The Singer

I can't work out if they're being clever. Whether they purposefully decided to base the video to "Yassou Maria" on Grease is by the by, the fact is that this is a damn fine slice of Med Eurosong. Comparisons have inevitably been made with Greece 2003, when Sakis lumped his way into 3rd with a back flip & a chest. That song was crud but the performance was all. This song is infintely better but his performance may well let him down. Sarbel isn't the best mover in the world, and tries to hide his limitations by throwing the kitchen sink into his routine. There's more arm movement here than on the floor of the Nikkei during the rice forecast. Still, he's clean cut with a prominent chin, and a top five is almost a definite.

The Past

One of the nations who needed an Eurosong victory to reaffirm their commitment to the contest, Greece have had a topsy-turvy history. It took them longer than many others to stop relying on the olive oiled chanteuse each year, and have recently been diverging their approach to embrace less wholesome singers clad in rubber, leather, and tight strapping. And so it came to pass that a olive oiled chanteuse won the thing in 2005, showing again that with big hair and short skirt you're invariably onto a winner. They're now one of the strongest Euronations around.

The Song

The video to "Yassou Maria" or "Hi there Maria" is Grease from Greece. Set in a junk yard, Sarbel stands astride a tyre, throwing his arms around like he's guiding in a jumbo, in the hope that it woo the eponymous girl next door into letting him apply his hip action to more productive use. Catchy, instantly forgettable pop which is head and shoulders above anything else in the category this year. Nail the perfomance and we could have a winner here.

Overall

For the last few years now Greece have proved themselves to be one of the strongest Euronations, and this is the latest in a line of well-gelled, brainless pop acts. I've placed this in such regard, that I've even changed the lyrics a bit from "heads up" to "hats off" which not only sounds much better, but also allows the tipping of the imaginary hat to be built into the performance, a sure-fire crowd pleaser. Sarbel is performing after the great, but slow, Lithuanians which can only help his chances. Oh, and I probably should mention, Maria's fine.

In a Nutshell
"Sarbel dances like a cheeky girl"

the philosopher says

Begging the question (petitio principii) Circular reasoning. The "informal fallacy" of (explicitly or implicitly) assuming the truth of the conclusion of an argument as one of the premises employed in an effort to demonstrate its truth.
Example: "Since lumpen Greek singers must not show their sensitive side in public toilets at Eurosong, it follows that George Michael will not go to Eurosong." Although arguments of this sort are formally valid because it is impossible for their conclusions to be false if their premises are true, they fail to provide logical support for their conclusions, which have already been accepted without proof at the outset.

Yassou Maria

First off she's a lady
And this is a ladies' world
Man, she drives them crazy
Dancing like a cheeky girl

All eyes on Maria
No lie, she's the bomb
Oh my, they all wanna see her
All wanna be the lucky one

Shake it up, shake it up, there you go
Oh oh... yassou Maria
Turn around, bring it down, go slow
Heads up, Lord have mercy

Shake it up, shake it up, there you go
Oh oh... yassou Maria
Ai ai ai... there she goes
Maria

Yassou Maria

Moves like Aphrodite
So high above the rest
Smooth like Cleopatra
An angel in a devil's dress

Her hips, lust in motion
Her lips, red like wine
She is the heart of attention
Probably should mention
She's mine...

Shake it up, shake it up, there you go
Oh oh... yassou Maria
Turn around, bring it down, go slow
Heads up, Lord have mercy

Shake it up, shake it up, there you go
Oh oh... yassou Maria
Ai ai ai... there she goes
Maria

Shake it up, shake it up, there you go
Oh oh... yassou Maria
Turn around, bring it down, go slow
Heads up, Lord have mercy

Shake it up, shake it up, there you go
Oh oh... yassou Maria
Ai ai ai... there she goes
Maria

Maria, Maria, yassou Maria
Maria, Maria

Is he Ca w
