"Koldun's surname means "wizard" in Russian, and he's had a song specially written for him about magic -- Belarus certainly deserves top marks for effort!"

The Spin

There are no super achievements and awards in the biography of this young performer. But Dmitry has a big talent and not only for music. In 2002 he graduated from Minsk gymnasium #12 with a silver medal and entered a chemical faculty of the Belarusian State University the same year.
In 2004 he became a finalist of the project "National Performer 2" on the Russian TV Channel "RTR". In 2004-2005 Koldun was a member of State Concert Orchestra, directed by Mikhail Finberg and worked with Oleg Eliseenkov's studio "Grand Prix". Dmitry took part in the national song and poetry festival "Molodechno 2005" and international festival of arts "Slavonic Bazaar in Vitebsk".

The young singer, Dima Koldun, is a protege of Kirkorov who took part in the television talent contest "Star Factory." His surname means "wizard" in Russian, and he's had a song specially written for him about magic -- Belarus certainly deserves top marks for effort. The only question is whether Koldun and his magic potion will set our beating hearts in motion.

Kirkorov sang for Russia in 1995, but only got 17th place. Mr Kirkorov reported that he was planning to sing for his native Bulgaria this year, but then threw it all away to cheer on Koldun for Belarus. Luckily, Eurovision has very liberal immigration rules.

Dima Koldun's record label created a crisis with the Belarussian entry. Koldun's record label is the one owned by Channel One in Russia.. Dima Koldun as the winner of their reality show signed a contract with the label. For a while in January, the label didn't believe Koldun was ready for such a big show such as Eurovision and forbid him participating in the contest. All was well in the end though as the entente cordiale was resumed between Russia & Belarus, following harsh words and a court decision.

People of course will most know you from 'Star Academy'. How did you get involved with that, and how did you find the experience? I just arrived in Moscow alone with no money and went to the Star Academy casting! And I did it! At the very end of the show I was depressed as there were just a few of us and we all were tired and almost crazy!!! I find it a good and useful experience anyway! I learned to be strong-willed.

" When I was a kid I wanted to become a surgeon, but then I entered the Chemistry department of the Belorussian State University. And music is in my soul, I've always liked it".

The Singer

Another butch walloper who frankly isn't very butch and doesn't have much wallop. He'll be "minsking" unconvincingly around the stage, positioned as one of the favourites for the title. Following a PR journey of thousands of miles across mainland Eruope, stuffing as much textiles into his suitcase as he tours for bartering back home, it has come to pass that our waxen faced, boot polish haired youngster has grown mightily confident in his chances.
"Koldun" not Dmitry or Dima, mind (they're very formal in Belarus), has been taken under the wing of electro-haired Mr Kirkorov who's another with a somewhat muddy Eurosong heritage.

The Past

Sordid looking pagan exploits, Terry Gilliam, and a diva who barged her way out of the hall after being snubbed by sensible semi-final voters. A solid Eurovision start from one of the true last bastions of Communist rule. I can forsee Belarus becoming one of the more interesting of Eurosong nations. Just pray they don't win the thing...we'll never get in, and if we do, we wouldn't want to wait to get out.

The Song

One of the pre-contest favourites this one, it has a James Bond "hookline" as the main interest in the chorus. And there's little else to it really. Definitely a step up for the Belarussians, but after listening to it for one minute you know it's heading for mid-table. The voice ain't great, but at least he boyfully tries his best to match the surprisingly professional production values, with some rather striking orchestration sticking out in particular. Not good, not awful, shouldn't win, but I wouldn't put it past Europe.

Overall

"The only question is whether Koldun and his magic potion will set our beating hearts in motion". Do I need to answer that one? The fact remains that Demetrius Wizard, although sounding like a character out of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Shitehits, doesn't appear to have the required oomph factor about him if this last Euro bastion of Communist rule is to grab enough support to triumph. It will make the final, and is undoubtedly popular especially in Scandi-land, but surely a trip into the heart of bread queues won't face the Eurosong community in 2008?

In a Nutshell
"More like the Great Soprendo than Roy Wood"

the philosopher says

"Festino" Name given by medieval logicians to a categorical syllogism with the standard form EIO-2. Example: No people deserving of our admiration and praise are inveterate liars, but some Russian singers are inveterate liars; therefore, some Russian singers are not people deserving of our admiration and praise. This is one of the fifteen forms in which syllogisms are always valid.

Work Your Magic

Welcome to the night and you will see
You've got the magic power
I am on my way I keep the key
To your tower
You can serve me something really hot
Call it love or madness
But you'll get the best of what I've got

Work your magic
I never wanna lose this feeling
I am able and I'm willing
Yes, I'm willing
Work your magic
You set my beating heart in motion
When you cast your loving potion
Your loving potion
Work your magic
I never wanna lose this feeling
I am able and I'm willing
Yes, I'm willing
Work your magic
You set my beating heart in motion
When you cast your loving potion
Over me

Baby you can put your spell on me
Making it slow and steady
Maybe I can solve your mystery
Are you ready
We are standing closely skin to skin
Playin' a very old game
But the game called love you always win

Work your magic
I never wanna lose this feeling
I am able and I'm willing
Yes, I'm willing
Work your magic
You set my beating heart in motion
When you cast your loving potion
Your loving potion
Work your magic
I never wanna lose this feeling
I am able and I'm willing
Yes, I'm willing
Work your magic
You set my beating heart in motion
When you cast your loving potion
Over me

So you work your magic
Baby work your magic
Keep my heart forever bound

Work your magic
I never wanna lose this feeling
I am able and I'm willing
Yes, I'm willing
Work your magic
You set my beating heart in motion
When you cast your loving potion
Your loving potion
Work your magic
I never wanna lose this feeling
I am able and I'm willing
Yes, I'm willing
Work your magic
You set my beating heart in motion
When you cast your loving potion
Over me

or is it Dmitry Koldun the quirky-voiced dull-tongued joker who likes a lady (maybe)
