"The rule in Eurovision, however, is never say never – Everything depends on just how bad the other entries are. Last year Finland took the final, proving that anything is possible."

The Spin

Gerli Padar is Tanel sister. Tanel won the thing in 2001 with a shocking effort called "Everybody". Her song isn't much better. By all accounts Gerli was famous way before Tanel even thought of massacring a pop tune with an Aruban. Her Idols/influences: Music depending on mood. Her Hobbies: Sleeping, sex, seeing elephant instead of a fly. View on life: Love like you´ve never been hurt!

2001: Eurolaul held on 3rd February, won by Padar. Eurovision Song Contest held on 12th May, won by a Padar.
2007: Eurolaul held on 3rd February, won by Padar. Eurovision Song Contest held on 12th May....

Padar, whose look and musical style shows strong similarities to that of American superstar Pink, was by far the least embarrassing choice for Estonians. With so many earnest-yet-mediocre performances for audiences to cringe over, it was fortunate that organizers of this year’s event put a light, comic spin on the proceedings. Between presentations, contestants in the studio could be seen clowning around with cloth snowballs, and during a voting interval one of the past Eurolaul hits, Suntribe’s “Let’s Get Loud,” was lip synced by men in drag.

Gerli will be the second Padar to represent Estonia at Eurovision. In 2001, her brother Tanel Padar, partnered in a duet with Aruban-born Dave Benton, won the contest in Denmark, paving the way for Tallinn to host the event the following year. While Padar’s song may get Estonia past the qualifying round this year, it’s doubtful that it’ll get much further. The rule in Eurovision, however, is never say never – Everything depends on just how bad the other entries are. Last year Finland took the final, proving that anything is possible.

Gerli has sung twice (1999 and 2002) in the Estonian national final of the Eurovision Song Contest. Gerli has played the leading roles in the musicals Cabaret and Chess. She has hosted many TV shows and danced to the final of the popular TV show, "Dancing With The Stars". She is bringing up a 2.5-year-old daughter, Amanda Rebeca.
Together with Gerli, also the best Estonian competitive dancers, Martin Parmas, Aleksandr Makarov And Marko Kiigajaan, having won a number of medals in World Championships, European Championships and World Cups, will be performing.

The Singer

Estonia seem to have a low opinion of their Eurosong chances these days. Which appropriately shows a bit of class from a nation who continually put in fine pre-selection middle of the road songs, a number of which would happily grace the big show. This year (rather stupidly IMHO), they went for the soft rock of Gerli, a woman of substance singing a song as translucent as Alpen water.

The Past

Ruffus got punched upon arriving back in Tallinn after the 2003 contest. Some might say an over-reaction by the Estonians, a nation who weren't used to Eurovision failure. Wogan's paranoid fantasy of "Baltic block voting" aside, Estonia has done a super job over the years bearing in mind the handicap of so many singers/songs with double consonants and vowels.
They won it in 2001 with a commonly held opinion that it was a sack of shite, and should have never got close to the podium.

The Song

A saucy effort this song, which I fear is quite at odds with Ms Padar's general mein, a rock chick of typically average Estonian forcefulness. Relating a story of doirty sexual sin in a land of inveterate conservativism, Gerli pushes back the boundaries of Estonian popular music, creating a social revolution in the process. Maybe. Or alternatively her song will land mid-table and she'll have a 30minute ferry ride back home on Thursday.

Overall

Gerli will of course have much local support from her closest of neighbours in Helsinki, and what with a solid draw (23) and family insider knowedge of what it takes to be a winner, she should stand a chance. But I fear it won't be enough to rescue a final place for her, encumbered as she is by an instantly forgettable track.

In a Nutshell
"Will she be in the pink after her doirty night of sin"

the philosopher says

phenomenology Description of experience. Hence, a philosophical method restricted to careful analysis of the intellectual processes of which we are introspectively aware, without making any assumptions about their supposed causal connections to existent external objects. Philosophers who have made extensive use of diverse phenomenological methods include Brentano, Husserl, Hartmann, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty.

Gerli has encompassed an interesting example of the phemonology in the lyrics below, a cold evening in which the butch walloper wonders whether her beau will slip off the basque and in doing so break a number of Estonian laws.

Partners In Crime

We're standing in the rain
And sipping cold champagne
The night is full of angels of sin
The demons of pleasure and pain

You whisper in my ear
I'm holding back the tears
Your words are burning the way to my heart
That's been held hostage for years

The wild look in your eyes
Will light my fire inside
This is the night that we cannot deny
We'll always be partners in crime

I kiss your lips so sweet
Mmm... but do you feel the heat?
Is it so wrong to be hungry for love?
To follow the passion so deep?

The wild look in your eyes
Will light my fire inside
This is the night that we cannot deny
We'll always be partners in crime

The wild look in your eyes
Will light my fire inside
This is the night that we cannot deny
We'll always be partners in crime

Now it's too late to turn back the time
We just have to go with the flow
I will be yours and you will be mine
And that's how the story goes

The wild look in your eyes
Will light my fire inside
This is the night that we cannot deny
We'll always be partners in crime

The wild look in your eyes
Will light my fire inside
This is the night that we cannot deny
We'll always be partners in crime
