" A few months later she represented Sweden in Eurovision in Munich, and 6.1 million Swedish television viewers, 84 % of the population, watched the competition - a record that still has not been broken".

Scandinavian superstar Carola is an phenomenon. Constantly giving it her all whether on-stage or in the studio, she's like a vocal blast furnace. Through the years, she's made pop, hymns, rock, ballads, disco, gospel, folk music, lullabies and AOR, performing in musicals, TV shows, Pan-Nordic Christmas specials and numerous sold-out concert tours all over Scandinavia. In the hands of most artists, this combination of styles could have ended up being too diversified. But somehow every style of music ends up sounding tailor-made for her.

Carola Haggkvist was born in Stockholm on September 8, 1966.
She appeared on television for the first time after winning a talent show in 1977. A couple of years later promoter Bert Karlsson discovered her and she was offered to take part in Melodifestivalen 1982, the national preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest, but she turned down the offer. However, in 1983, she decided to participate in Melodifestivalen with Framling, winning the contest with full points from all juries. This was her big breakthrough. A few months later she represented Sweden in Eurovision in Munich, and 6.1 million Swedish television viewers, 84 % of the population, watched the competition - a record that still has not been broken. She came third.

In her native Sweden, Carola is recognised by everyone. She can hardly go anywhere without being approached by fans. Like the true star that she is, she takes time to write autographs, chat away and show her fans that she knows that she wouldn't be anywhere without them.
In 1991 she won the Melodifestivalen with Fangad av en stormvind. At the Eurosong in Rome she tied with Amina from France. The rules stated that the entries that had been awarded most amounts of twelve points would win, but since both countries had been awarded the same amounts of 12's, the entries were separated by counting awarded 10's. Carola had more, and won.

In 1992, she had another huge hit with 'Fångad av en stormvind'. She also became the first Scandinavian artist to release an album in China, where she performed on national television in front of more than 600 million viewers.

In 1997, the hit single 'Dreamer', an energetic disco classic with a rock attitude, lent a voice to proud, hard-working, loving moms out there. The song was a new track on a Best Of double-CD that summed up her career so far. In 1998, Carola was the Swedish voice of Mirjam, in Steven Spielberg's first animated movie, 'The Prince of Egypt'. In 2003, a four-disc box set (a very rare release among Swedish artists) and live-DVD hit the stores.

Carola's back again! She get's a strong gestures count if only for the trademark mane of hairs flying around her face. She does like a wind machine does our Carola, and has a look on her face not unlike a dog sticking its head out of the car window on a motorway. Carola isn't wholly approved of by many Eurosong fans, as she has denounced homosexuality on numerous occasions in the past (not, one would think, the most intelligent comment to make when you have such a Eurovision heritage). The melodifestivalen was amusing this year if only for the streaker, and there was a welcome surfeit of schlager to choose from. Carola's dynamic pipe cleaner legs from '93 are long gone, and now that the corpulent Chrisitian has prevailed on the national stage once more, I can see her winning the whole shebang again, dependant on the draw. She singing near the end of the semi-final (followed by her Aldi equivalent Estonia) which is ideal. I want her to win really, because I want to go back to Stockholm again.

"Have faith...but not necessarily Carola's"

Swedish Chef

Everybody 1...2...3..."Put the chicken in the basket".
"Even to this very day, Swedish chefs from Stockholm to Umeå spend as much time practising the mannerisms of the Muppet Show creation, as they do cutting up cabbage" Carola didn't say. "Only a true Swedish chef would start throwing eggs, wildly wave a cleaver in the air, and spontaneously burst into song. Something to be proud about…I only hope he isn't gay" Carola wouldn't have added as she certainly doesn't hold those type of views.

Evighet

Du finns i varje andetag
I varje steg
Som himlen bar en evighet

Tiden den star stilla nar
Vi ror vid varann
Mitt hjarta det brinner
Nar karlek vinner

En evighet, en kort sekund
Nar vi blir ett med tid och rum
Ett ogonblicks oandlighet
Langt bortom allt, i evighet

Jag vill alltid stanna har
For har ar jag fri
Du ar den varld jag lever i

Ingenting kan stoppa mig
Det blaser en vind
I hjartan som brinner
Nar karlek vinner

En evighet, en kort sekund
Nar vi blir ett med tid och rum
Ett ogonblicks oandlighet
Langt bortom allt, i evighet

Mitt hjarta det brinner
Nar karlek vinner

Invincible

Never gonna run away
I’m not gonna hide
I know just what I feel inside

Nothing’s gonna make a change
Forever with you
I’m always on your side
You’re always on my mind

Invincible – One love supreme
Unbreakable – One land of dreams
Two hearts unite – Insatiable
This love tonight – Invincible

Love is like a miracle
Invading your heart
When you’re struck, you know are

When it’s comin’ over you
You won’t let it go
I’m always on your side
You’re always on my mind

Invincible – One love supreme
Unbreakable – One land of dreams
Two hearts unite – Insatiable
This love tonight – Invincible

I’m always on your side
You’re always on my mind

“What has changed in the last 15 years?” she asked. “Well, we don’t have a live band anymore. But it still feels vibey and modern and great. And it’s great to see that established singers, like Anna Vissi, are still in the contest. But it’s basically still the same. You have three minutes to just explode and give your all. I love it.”
