Marion/Maryon Gargiulo, a 16 year old from La Seyne-Sur-Mer on the French Riviera, will represent Monaco at this year's Eurovision.

In 2002 she won television talent show, “Graines de Stars” and went on to record her first single. Märyon is an experienced singer and has performed in over 60 concerts including many live on television.
The song is called Prenez Soin de Notre Planète, (Take care of our planet). By all accounts none other than Prince Albert of Monaco felt the message of the song was of importance.
Perhaps over-brimming with confidence, the Monacon government of the principality has already looked into possible concert halls should they win this year.

The song will be heard at the start of March during a one hour special about the contest. To add the required gravitas to the press release, we were told that the participants attended a cocktail party at Stars'N'Bars in Monaco, where Prince Albert with members of the government attended to congratulate Marion.

The Singers

She's not very good, but is probably the only singer with a Royal stamp of approval. In fact, I think she's the worst singer of all of them. I counted three shifts of key during her singing, which is one less than my fridge makes. Nuff said.

The Past

One win, good results in other years, but Monaco left in 1979, and now the over-rich, under-developed principality have deigned to re-join the Eurovision fold. It's difficult to like Monaco really, being as it is stuffed to the rafters with income tax escaping, over pampered old women, who've had more facelifts than the Ford Mondeo. But hey, everyone is the same in the ESC world, so welcome back Monaco.

The Song

It doesn't seem to have a chorus, which still confuses me. It's as though the writer got all excited at the quality of the first verse, and then just had a panic attack and decided to start all over again with the second.

Overall

She's young, star-struck, has met royalty, but quite frankly I'm the one who has to listen to her, so I'm not going to be munificent. She can't sing, the song is weak, and I don't know why Monaco bothered. There, I've said it, and I feel a lot better now.

In a Nutshell
"A modern Dion disaster"

Our Planet

Our planet
Take care of our planet
There are so many things to save
The madness of people, the storms
Have damaged it

Who remembers the virgin coasts?
And white paradises?
Who remembers the blue oceans?
Wales and their songs?

In this world where nothing is sacred any more
So far from our values
Before the desert wipes out
Our dreams of colors

Take care of our planet
There are so many things to save
May the madness of people stop
May our children be able to dream

Their eyes turned to the stars
Their hands stretched to the sky
May the winds carry their sails
May our steps guide their wings

We have constructed prisons of glass
On forests of ashes
We have transformed our universe
Without trying to understand it

On our beaches flows ink
This is the blood of the earth
May those who give us orders
Hear our prayers

We dream of a paradise on earth
We dream

Their eyes turned to the stars
Their hands stretched to the sky
May the winds carry their sails
May our steps guide their wings

Take care of our planet

Notre Planete

On a transformé notre univers
Sans chercher à comprendre

Sur nos plages coule de l'encre
C'est le sang de la terre
Que les hommes qui nous commandent
Entendent nos prières

Nous, on rêve d'un paradis sur terre
On rêve

Les yeux tournés vers les étoiles
Leurs mains tendues vers le ciel
Que les vents emportent leurs voiles
Que nos pas guident leurs ailes

Prenez soin de notre planète
